Yet Another Great Betrayal?

 2nd May 2002

Once again it appears that the British Government are determined to railroad their kith and kin into another totally unacceptable situation. One which would see an erstwhile and vibrant colony, delivered into the hands of a foreign power, totally against the wishes of its people.

It must be remembered that it was the British Governments seeming indifference to the fate of the Falkland Islands prior to 1982, and the position of its citizens on those islands, which led directly to the Argentine invasion and subsequent war.

The Gibraltarians, who are full EU members, are being subjected to a non-stop campaign of harrassment and denial of their EU rights, by a Spanish government intent on annexing Gibraltar. Spain is in blatant breach of a whole raft of EU laws, yet the response of the British Government to this intimidation and provocation has been weak and ineffective.

Naturally, just as the Argentines perceived they had a green light to invade and occupy the Falkland Islands, the Spanish Government perceive that they have been given carte blanch to do as they like in respect of Gibraltar, without fear of any real rebuke or retalitory action from the British Government.

The actions of the Spanish Government in respect of Gibraltar, also make one wonder just how deep are the roots of its democracy. It was the facist dictator General Franco, who closed the border completely in 1969, and it appears from current Spanish actions, that the same people still have their hands on the levers of power in the corridors of Spanish political life.

Through the outside links listed below, you will be able to discover Gibraltar, the background to the difficulties with Spain, the machinations and 'double speak' of the British Government, and the points of view of Gibraltar's 30,000 inhabitants.

This Embassy fully supports the Gibraltarian people, in their struggle against Spanish intimidation and British intrigue. We firmly believe that it is up to the Gibraltarians alone to decide the future of their country for themselves.
